It Started With a Knock on My Door!

It was a Saturday morning and I was reviewing my stock trades for the week,  I was trying to put off another trip to Home Depot to buy some more parts for my ailing drip water system. I could just call our lawn service, but my Dad always fixed things himself and unfortunately I feel a certain amount of guilt is I don’t at least try fixing things. It’s just that it was getting hot in Las Vegas and I really wasn’t looking forward to trying to get a couple of leaking water distribution fixtures fixed. So I decided to take another look at my stock trades for the week. I got up to top off my coffee cup when I heard the knock on the door.

Actually our black lab, Jack, heard the knock first and was now warning whoever dared to knock on “his door” that 90 lbs of fierce predator was guarding the house.  I opened the door and told Jack he didn’t have to eat the UPS deliveryman. Sam calmed down and I wondered who had sent me a package from London, England.
 

I took the package back to my office, remembering the conversations I had had with my old friend George Halley about his new gambling strategy

George and I go back a long ways. We became friends when George was running a blackjack team about twenty years ago in Las Vegas. I gave him lots of insider information on the casino games and in a sense became an active partner in his venture. I was quite profitable for both of us

Since then I had been on several gambling jaunts with George when he visited the US. I had also joined him on a couple of European ventures where we started by playing roulette in London (George’s headquarters) and ended up playing in several French, German and Italian casinos as well

Now, it looked like George might be opening another adventure for us. He had been studying the games of roulette, craps, baccarat and even blackjack. He was convinced that each game’s volatility changed frequently that that he could develop a new way of playing using knowledge of the game’s changing volatility to gain an edge over the house

However, he had gotten stumped. That was what the package he sent was all about. He had sent me hundreds of games he played using his Volatility Based Play. I had agreed to review his play and try to help him as his ideas sounded like a possible major breakthrough in player advantage gambling!

What His System Needed Was a Better Timing Trigger!

George Halley is one of the smartest gamblers I know. He doesn’t like to even bet unless he had an edge. George was never haphazard about his gambling. He only liked to play when he had an edge and now he was looking to develop what could be one of the biggest edges in gambling

George had been studying changing volatilities in casino games with even-money bets – games like blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat

He had discovered that for short-term play, the game’s volatility had more to do with whether a player won or lost than even the house edge

He had been working on a way to adjust the size of his bets to take advantage of the changing volatility in each game

This is similar to the principles behind blackjack card counting. With card counting the player will increase the size of his bets when he has an edge and reduce them when the game favored the house

George was developing a system using similar principles. Except his system didn’t count anything. He looked at how a game’s volatility changed and then developed a system to take advantage of more favorable betting periods.

I liked the concept. It makes a lot of sense to me and explained a lot about hot and cold streaks that probability theory couldn’t.  I remembered some of the times that games had quickly changed from red hot (in my favor) to ice cold (with the house beating the tar out of me).

George’s system seemed to work pretty well. However, he had issues over what he called “the timing trigger.” By timing trigger he meant the signal that would tell him that the game’s volatility had changed and he needed to change his betting. His notes showed that he was so close to perfecting his system except for this timing issue

Yet, timing could be the critical issue to make his volatility-based betting system work. The key to winning with it was knowing exactly when to change the style of betting. It had been driving him crazy and I admit I was a bit stumped.  Then I thought of the Captain.

I Get Help from an Unexpected Source – the Captain.

I spent a couple of days trying different ideas out on the Halley Formula. It was a really impressive system and just needed a final piece of finesse – in the form of a better timing trigger – to become a breakthrough way of beating the casinos!

On Sunday afternoon I decided to take a break and play a little craps at the Horseshoe Club

Since the 1950s when the old mobster, Benny Binion ran the club like his personal fiefdom, the Horseshoe Club had been known as a craps house. If you are serious about playing craps and want the fairest game anywhere you can’t find a better place to play than the Horseshoe Club.

I parked in a parking garage, took a shortcut through the casino floor of the Golden Nugget, walked across Fremont Street and entered the Horseshoe Club. Even though it was Sunday afternoon – not a particularly busy time for most Las Vegas casinos – there were six craps tables in use.

I picked a nosy table in one corner of the craps pit, bought in and starting playing. I immediately recognized the Captain at the other end of the table along with a couple of newbies he was training.

The Captain is famous among craps players for being a controlled shooter – that is a person who sets the dice before he shoots and is able to control the dice enough to alter the outcomes from being random.

On the side he runs a school for wannabe controlled shooters. I nodded at him. He was watching a new player set the dice and trying out his controlled shooting.

While some casinos frown on controlled dice shooters, the Horseshoe Club has the philosophy that most controlled shooters don’t really affect the outcomes of the dice all that much and they tolerate them.

One old dealer told me that actually like controlled dice shooters. “Most of these system players will lose a couple of bankrolls for every hot roll they get in on. We figure they are net losers and we don’t run them off.”

 
I  put down a couple of come bets, took odds and picked up some quick wins as the shooter started repeating numbers. This was a signal for me to go all in

Fifteen minutes later I was up a little over $5,000. I give the Captain a little signal and five minutes later we met in the coffee shop

The Captain is one of the more astute gamblers I know. He only likes to play when he has an edge.  He was a blackjack card counter back in the 1980s and did pretty well at it. For a while he ran a video poker team capitalizing on jackpot machines that offered profitable play.  He has always loved craps and he has perfected his dice control methods well enough to make some consistent money off of the craps game

He was a man with over forty years experience beating the casinos and I thought he might have some insights into ways to perfect Halley’s Formula

I outlined the problem for him just to see if he was interested. With the Captain you never know. If he finds a problem intriguing he can be very helpful. These days he is sort of set in his ways and not as interested in new gambling challenges as he used to be.

He started asking me questions about the system. I ended up using a pile of napkins to write out parts of the system. After our third coffee refill I had him hooked.

”I think I might be able to look at this a little more. Can you send over what you’ve got of this system?

I dropped off a complete set of notes on the system the next day. 

"I Don't Have Time to Screw Around with Practice Play!"

I got busy the next week. I had a couple of large wins trading gold and oil stock futures so I didn’t think much about the Halley Formula

I was updating my daily stock trades prospects list when I got an email from the Captain

“Meet me at the SLS Casino coffee shop at 4 o’clock. I’ve got something to show you.”

I  readily agreed to the meeting as I was getting tired of looking at potential trades. I drove over to the SLS turned my car over to valet parking and headed for the coffee shop.

I found the Captain in a booth in a back corner booth sipping an ice tea and playing with a stack of casino chips.

”Checking out the craps action here?” I asked

“Nope. Playing mini-baccarat for the last couple of hours. He had over $2,300 in chips stacked on the table.”

“I didn’t know baccarat to be one of your games?” I queried

“Normally it isn’t. However is seemed to be a great game for this new system.

“You talking about the Halley Formula?”

“Yeah. I’d like to meet him sometime. He has come up with quite a system.”

“You having any luck on the timing problem?”

“Yeah. That’s what I want to talk about.”

He pulled out his laptop computer and logged onto his favorite online casino

While the mini-baccarat game was loading he starting talking about what he had discovered

“Pretty neat huh?” And, it works just as well with craps and baccarat. I am still working on blackjack because using this system requires some changes in playing strategy.”

He agreed.  We retired to the coffee shop to compare notes.  I asked him how he did.

“I am up over $7,000.  And, you?”

“I won a little over $2,000” I said.  “Now for the sixty-four thousand dollar question.  How do you rate the system?”

“Somewhere between miraculous and iridescent.”

“What the hell is iridescent?”

He shrugged.  “Better than anything else I’ve ever seen.  That’s iridescent.”
